Do you clean your makeup brushes? …..come on be honest?
Your obviously here to learn how to make a DIY makeup brush spot cleaner.
Maybe you clean them but not as often as you should. I am guilty of this! Leaving my brushes until they are so nasty that it takes me twice as long to do a deep clean than it should.
Makeup brushes can be a breeding ground for all sorts of bacteria and oils and if you don’t clean them properly you could be rubbing this all over your face every day!
I have seen all sorts of daily brush cleaners in the stores that range in price from $8 – $20
way to cheap much too frugal to spend money on something I know I can make.
For a few dollars…and using mostly stuff around the house you can make a DIY makeup brush spot cleaner that works amazing!
You will need:
- 1 tbsp leave in conditioner (I used a detangler because its what I had around)
- 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol 99% (I had to go and buy this from the drug store because I only had the lower % kind this stuff will kill all bacteria and dry faster than the lower % kind)
- 1 1/2 tsp shampoo (any kind will do)
- 1 cup water (boiled or bottled)
- 1 1/2 tsp dish soap
oh and you also need measuring spoons & cups, bowl and a spray bottle.
There are really no instructions here other than slap it all in a bowl and watch the science happen.
Just make sure you mix it together good. Gentle though with the mixing you don’t want to cause any suds when your mixing you just want to get everything all mixed up together. After you done mixing just pour your DIY makeup brush spot cleaner solution into whatever spray container you plan on using and voila your done! and ready to attack your grubby brushes.
Quick note here if your brushes are super nasty do a deep clean – I use baby shampoo and water and clean them all up about once a month.
The DIY makeup brush spot cleaner we just made is for everyday use so that your brushes stay fresh and bacteria free in between your big deep clean.
So how do you use the DIY makeup brush spot cleaner?…….well let me tell you my fellow scientists.
Just spray some of your solution onto a paper towel or clean cloth if you prefer and wipe your brush around on the napkin. I usually use a combination of swirling and sweeping motions so that I get all the makeup off. If your cleaning bigger brushes like your blush/powder/foundation brushes you will need more DIY makeup brush spot cleaner and paper towel because you use more product on those brushes….but for your eyeshadow brushes you will most likely be able to use just one napkin for all of them. Then just reshape the brush (the will only be slightly wet) and lay them flat to dry. These brushes will be ready to use the next day! Fresh & clean!
Doing this little spot clean every day will not only keep your brushes clean and bacteria free but it will also save you money. As you know brushes are expensive the the more we clean them and keep them in good condition the longer they will last and the more money we save! yay to saving the money!
If your wondering why these ingredients are in the DIY makeup brush spot cleaner here is a little breakdown for you. The conditioner will help keep the bristles soft and help shiny, the dish soap will cut through any greasy product or oils that may have rubbed off your face onto the brushes, the shampoo removes the makeup from the brushes, the rubbing alchohol kills bacteria and also helps your brushes dry very quickly so you don’t have to wait hours or overnight like when you do a deep clean.
So thats it!
